March 1, 2014 (Raleigh, North Carolina) -- Dennis Stallings, FAIA, Principal and Design Director with Clark Nexsen, has been elevated to the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows. This honor is awarded to members who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society, and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of architects as individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Stallings joins the fewer than two percent of all registered architects who have received the honor.

As noted in the AIA Fellowship summary, “Dennis Stallings has advanced the architectural profession at the intersection between design practice and architectural education, building a foundation for critical thinking in the design studio and leading by example with his built work.”

Stallings has been a Professor of Practice at NC State University College of Design since 1993. He has focused his teaching on developing his students’ genuine passion for architecture and on building their confidence to complete outstanding projects. As a result, his students are equipped with the core competences and creative capital to shape the built environment of the 21st century. Dennis has directly influenced over 400 students and his influence extends beyond these students to the firms where they work and the practices they have founded, across America and in many parts of the world.

“Owing to his standing in the architecture community and his many contributions to both practice and teaching, it is most appropriate that Dennis has been elevated to Fellowship. Both Dennis and the College of Fellows will benefit from his inclusion,” said Jeffrey Lee, FAIA at Clark Nexsen.

Stallings is a much-sought-after juror for AIA chapters across the country, including the Boston Society of Architects, AIA Indiana, AIA Georgia, and AIA Philadelphia. He chaired his local Triangle AIA Chapter Design Awards jury in 1999 and in 2012 served as chair of both the AIA North Carolina and the AIA South Atlantic Region design awards juries. He has lectured at several AIA conferences, including AIA Georgia and AIA Indiana.

Stallings joins a class of 139 other successful candidates from across the U.S. – seven from the southeast region and two others from AIA North Carolina. He will receive his medal at the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony during the AIA 2014 National Convention in Chicago in June. About the College of Fellows
The AIA College of Fellows seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the Institute, advance the profession of architecture, mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society. The College of Fellows, founded in 1952, is composed of members of the Institute who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.
