A mixed-use program of office and retail, with private residences above, define the Blumenhaus. It is a newly built building set for completion this spring; together with those nearing completion in its immediate vicinity, it is part of the larger effort to rebrand the Escher-Wyss district of Zürich–characterized by its industrial heritage. Blumenhaus is adjacent to a former ship building hall–or Shiffbau, in German–of Escher Wyss & Cie., an industrial company from which the area derives its name. Blumenhaus' façade is finished in matte aluminum, punctuated by poppy flower silhouettes, and inversely, reliefs of the same pattern; Blumenhaus' materiality acknowledges the area's 'rough' industrial past, whose incorporation of technology is readily apparent, upon second-glance.
