Pier 42 completes a critical missing link of public access along Lower Manhattan's East River shoreline. MNLA's 2014 phased master plan for the park envisions a spectacular transformation of this 8-acre, abandoned and decaying industrial warehouse pier. Features include a passive space that adds ecological value and habitat, as well as a playground, benches, a multipurpose space, and groves of plantings.
In 2019, NYC Parks announced plans to create public access and recreational amenities on the Pier 42 Deck. These include basketball and tennis courts, a soccer field, picnic tables, and benches for recreation during the construction of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project.
Bulkhead repair and construction of a permanent upland park including an entry garden, walking paths, a playground, a comfort station, and additional passive recreation are now complete.
