GRADE designed a custom architecture installation for the 2021 Venice Biennale Exhibition, organized by the European Cultural Centre. The exhibition theme “Time Space Existence” relates to GRADE’s design ethos and touches on some of the intangible aspects of our work and process, presented as a contemporary realization of space. While embodying the values of our residential work within an abstract form, our installation offers the viewer an interactive experience of timeless design via the structure and experience of moving through it. A three-dimensional framework rises up from the base where a two-dimensional diagram is etched, reflecting the origins of our design, which was realized through a distillation of ideas and aesthetic concerns from the traditional to the modern. Against the historic Palazzo Bembo, cerused oak slats transform, undulate, and converge overhead in a harmonious pattern of modern arches elegantly interpreted from classical sources.
