Housing units / Studios for artists Cheval Noir

Project in Momentary Association with Atelier Gigogne.

The mission of the competition, held in 2003, was to transform the former Hallemans breweries into 31 housing units/studios for artists. Besides the transformation of the existing building, a new construction was necessary to provide the needed surfaces. It creates space in the courtyard and allows light to penetrate.
The new construction shelters the elevator, which reaches all the units in the complex via footbridges over the courtyard and corridors in the old building. This outdoor circulation has been designed to enable spontaneous meetings between inhabitants.
Since the site is in between two public spaces (a street and a square), both of them have an entrance to the building, this creates a visual connection between the two spaces.
