Berkeley, CA
The new 8-level, 720-space public garage in Berkeley’s vibrant Arts-District provides badly needed parking for local business and Arts patrons. The environmentally sustainable, net-zero energy facility’s features include:
Vehicle-circulation is designed as a “double helix” ramp structure with 3-lane vehicle access. Lanes are flexibly adjusted allowing multiple entry and exit lanes as-needed. The circulation efficiently moves cars via ramps for ascending and descending vehicles.
The garage has two street frontages – each side having its own color motif, red or green. Perforated-steel facades act in concert with outrigger stairs to create sculptural elevations. The perforated steel skin is built in modules of pleated panels at different angles, giving an overall effect of movement on the facade.
Colorful, cantilevered, open-air staircases are the antithesis of archetypal garage stairs - typically unpleasant for sight and smell, and possibly with a sense of unsafety. The projecting stairs in view of the public feel safe, and are architecturally striking with panoramic views to the east and west.
