Royal Court Liverpool, won in open competition, is an exercise in restrained, phased reinvention. The interiors of Liverpool’s iconic 1930’s theatre are revitalised to breathe new life into the Grade II listed art deco building. The cabaret-style stall seating and the bar are remodelled, the foyer and auditorium are redecorated and new circle seating, a balcony and new toilets are inserted. These completed works – constituting just the first phase of the four-phase redevelopment project to bring the much-loved theatre into the 21st century – have already improved the audience experience. Future phases will create a new entrance foyer and a rooftop bar and extend the back-of-house areas.
