BRIDGEHAMPTON HOUSE

Located on a 2-acre lot in Bridgehampton, NY, the forms of the simple house recall the vernacular of local agricultural buildings. The central double-height glass living room sets a tone for the project, connecting front and back yards and allowing both east and west light to penetrate deep into the living spaces. The axial house circulation is carefully crafted so each circulation corridor ends on a composed view of the yard, drawing one through the house.  A large kitchen, pantry, and mudroom area are located on the northeast of the house, connecting to the playroom/cabana to the south. A family TV room and generously-spaced guest room are located on the opposite side of the house. Private spaces, such as the master suite and secondary bedrooms are appropriately located on the second floor.  Separate guest room suite, equipped with a full-size bathroom and walk-in closet is located directly above the playroom/cabana.

The Western Red Cedar exterior is articulated through the manipulation of a singular material, in favor of material diversity. Variations in scale, texture and porosity generate a complex yet legible exterior detailing language.

A similar strategy is deployed for the restrained interior palette. The interplay of light and space, modulated by wood louvers and subtle textural variation play a critical role in creating a richness to the quality of the interior space.  The architecture is subtly embedded with Scandinavian references, a nod the client’s formative years spent abroad. Window proportioning, furnishing, and palette all to work to cultivate a sense of nostalgic familiarity.
