Timelessness and dignity are the underlying concepts to the design of this tower. Our city is one of many images, architectural styles and periods, so it has been our desire to seek an architecture that remains quiet from the standpoint of form, and achieves its visual richness through detailing, materials and the play of light across the texture of the building. Creating two sets of exterior walls with one pair more solid than the other has been the source for the plan of the building. The more solid walls face the nearby buildings and extend above the roofline to form a strong verticality. The more open walls are oriented towards the long views over the club to the city and ocean beyond. These walls are capped by a cantilever at the helipad on the roof providing a strong horizontal cornice to the building seen from the south and east. By featuring these two attitudes of composition in counterpoint to one another, a visual complexity is created from forms derived from the surrounding context. This means of designing is not based on fashion or trends, and tends to provide lasting values to the investment and the building. The strong shadow beneath the cornice becomes a beacon of subtle lighting at night. The texture on the walls of the building is derived from a detail in the windows that creates a modern version of a bay window as the glass wraps back into a setback on the building façade. From the interior, this provides a greater view, and from the exterior the shade and shadow will animate the façade throughout the day. The windows vary from this pattern by means of a curtain wall at certain points, which provides a scale and a variety to the façade. The exterior material is wheat colored cast stone aggregate in white cement. Not unlike the travertine of the Getty, this coloration seen against the green landscape will be commanding in the sunlight.
At the pedestrian level, the base of the building is granite and the landscape is tailored as an extension of the architecture of the building. The vehicular arrival is through cascading grass terraces past a simple linear fountain and into a room that is a combination of plaza and motor court. Extraordinary elliptical columns set in front of a black granite wall dominate the entry. Elegant doors, unique fixtures and rich, but understated materials provide the character appropriate to the owners as they arrive in this space.
