BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The objective of the project is the complete restoration of an existing building in order to obtain a better behavior of the building both to functional and constructive level.

Functionally, the building must respond to the new challenges and regulations, and to improve the efficiency of the library service.

Constructively, the aim is to achieve the highest energy rating, an A, and thus improve the efficiency of the building.

The library building, currently in operation, is a volume of ground floor and three-story floor, located south-east of a park. The scope of the project's intervention is exclusively registered in the building itself, without modifying the volume, but the existing porchs on the ground floor and part of the access porch on the first floor are constructed.

Finally, an approximate area of 1815m2 of program is available.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING. FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM AND INTENDED USES

The spaces of the library will be distributed in four levels:

Ground floor

The ground floor, which has been expanded when building the current porch, has direct access from the park, allowing the independent operation of this plant with respect to the rest of the building.

On this floor, there are located the reception and promotion area, the work area and the children's library.

First floor

The first floor is is where the main access to the building is located, through the square on Joan XXIII street.

In the access zone, there are the return area, the information desk, the self-service machines and the catalog, the newspaper and magazine area and the music and image area.

An elongated strip on the east facade contains the main stairs and elevator, a more enclosed library area, and the block of services and the emergency stairway. This strip is repeated on the high floors as well.

Second and third floors

The rest of the library fund is distributed between the second and third plants.

In the upper floors, the façade facing the park is formed by a solid / window sequence that configures spaces between glass and pillar. In these spaces there are individual seats with computer.

SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA

One of the main objectives of the project is to achieve an energy-efficient building, with an A rating.

To that end, the following operations are carried out:

• Reinforcement of thermal insulation in the entire building envelope.

• Replacement of the original carpentry for new high energy efficiency ones.

• Replacement of curtain wall on the north façade.

• Led lighting system with electronic regulation to obtain a uniform level of 500lux throughout the building.

• Geothermal climate system.
