Romanian Pavilion - UIA Tokyo 2011

Keep the message,  Pass the frame on to a child

The set design was based on the idea of illustrating our concept by using our resources and limitations in order to achieve the target - a minimalist and interactive space - by using no additional energy or resources: in our case - the mandatory deliverables.
The value of available resources was transferred from that of a single use investment to that of intelligent components.  The components were the very digital informative “brochures”, the digital photographic frames containing the pavilion concept and the visitor was able to  chose reusing them or donating them to children of disaster victims.
Each individual has the option to either pass through the pavilion or become one of the pavilion’s users by interacting with the “installation”:  watching the displays on the two opposite walls and deciding whether to take or not one of the digital photo frames and leaving an empty space behind.
The pavilion’s transient existence was “sketched-up” in real time by the “installation’s” own disappearance as frame after frame were removed by the visitors.
The “installation” has been made of “local materials”. The digital photo frames were acquired from Japanese manufacturers in order to support the local industry and reduce transportation needs.

Message

present
A life philosophy that is changing our lifestyle and dramatically reconsidering our relationship with nature.
Humanity, confronted with a global problem, designated sustainability as a global solution. But sustainability belongs rather to the past than to the present in the field of visionary future-telling.

beyond…
When considering the building construction and use during the last 80 – 90 years, it is worth noting that the evolution is linear, comprising of frustratingly small improvements as far as materials, building systems and construction techniques.
A true revolution in architecture is right around the corner, though.
The intelligent sustainable building, whose intelligence lays in a key global, interactive and internally regulatory operating platform such as PC’s Windows or intelligent phone’s Android.

target
A scenario for a sustainable, intelligent architecture practiced in Bucharest of year 2050+, would be possible, if we had an ambitious target.
The proposed target is to take Bucharest to the West level by year 2040.

strategy
The lagging behind the West can thus turn into benefit by not following the same path that they took until today, and finding instead our own path directly to common future - 2050.

Bucharest 2011
An urban “landscape” dominated by buildings that are, almost exclusively, large energy consumers and CO2 producers, with only 2 certified passive houses and 3 BREEAM- certified projects.

city 2050+
The urban image itself offered by the architectural icon of year 2050 will probably be not too different from the image that we see today.
But the urban “core” will be substantially different, based on components that are producing energy relatively independently, but are otherwise interconnected, interdependent and interactive.

buildings in 2050+
The new architectural paradigm will result in a building that is fundamentally new due to its “brain”. This new “body” in fact, invisible to the naked eye but have a huge impact on the end user and the architectural field determining the ten architectural commandments of sustainable building
