Kinsmen Park

S I TE
Kinsmen Park is Saskatoon’s oldest park, situated in a prime location between the downtown core and the South Saskatchewan River. The park was established in the early 1900s as a site for horse
racing and agricultural expositions. The park covers an area of 31 acres and currently hosts a children’s play area, a summer Shakespeare festival, summer sports, picnic grounds, and nordic skiing in the winter.

CHALLENGE
The park has traditionally been viewed as a place for children in the city, although the last few years have seen a decline in park use. Connectivity and access through the park are lacking,
riverbank conditions are degraded, and winter uses are limited. The redesign of Kinsmen Park is thus an important opportunity to revitalize its use and to help it better serve local and City-wide residents.

SOLUT ION
Space2place developed a phased Master Plan for Kinsmen Park that will guide its revitalization over the next 25 years. The Master Plan will enhance the park’s historical identity in the city, provide a variety of experiences for children and visitors of all ages, and improve connections through the park and to adjacent neighbourhoods. A new children’s play area and new winter programming will help to position the park as a year-round destination for residents and visitors alike. Native vegetation and habitat will be restored near the riverbank, while enhancing access and views to the river from the rest of the park.
