Whidbey Guest

Tucked behind a knoll that is topped by a stump which remains after old growth logging, this guest house is rooted in its context while floating above the undulating ground plane. So, it is simultaneously rooted and floating as it cantilevers over a shallow ravine. This notion is reinforced in the guest house itself, which is a clear diagram of solid (service functions – Kitchen, Bathroom, Closet and Mechanical Room) and open (served functions – Living Room, Dining Room and a Bedroom). Integrally situated within the compound of buildings (main house, workshop and guest house), each building has its own orthogonal precinct of solid (house) and void (clearing) that is interrelated to each other via perspectival views.
