House Overlooking Salt Marsh

The project consists of renovations and additions to a non-descript, circa 1980’s, home which sits on a uniquely private site overlooking a salt marsh with views to Long Island Sound.  The Owners requested that the home take more advantage of the views and have a modern aesthetic yet include vernacular design characteristics of the New England coastal town of Guilford. The spaces created, as well as the palette of materials employed, were deliberately kept simple and quiet in order for the house to serve as a backdrop to the beautiful site.

The existing construction was extensively rebuilt, with all new finishes, windows and mechanicals.  The interior layout was considerably reworked and spaces opened up to spectacular views of the salt marsh and Long Island Sound.  On the first floor, a new living room was constructed on the existing foundation of a former sunroom; a new screen room was added to this southeast corner of the house. On the second floor a master bedroom suite was constructed over the first floor screen room. A new stair tower was added on the east side of the home, connecting the first and second floor as well as a new third floor studio space which was added off the existing attic storey.

The exterior wall finishes are a combination of painted clapboard and weathered natural cedar flush siding.  The roofing consists of asphalt shingles and standing seam metal. Inside, the floors are natural stone, hardwood and wool carpeting. The windows, doors and simple trim are painted wood, the millwork is painted with some special pieces fabricated from white oak.
