The brief was for the refurbishment internally and externally of an existing annex to a Grade B Listed church in the southern inner- suburbs of Glasgow.
The primary issue was the condition of the existing 1970’s structure, which was in a poor state of repair and detracted from the fine character of the church.
Internally the limited budget was used strategically to re-line the existing spaces. Oak lining board (to reflect the character of the existing church interior) were added to the internal spaces as a discrete layer allowing the existing space to be clearly read against the new insertions.
Externally a similar approach is adopted. Black cement cladding panels wrap the existing annex structure closing off all existing windows and allowing the new illuminated entrance to be clearly identified. This entrance is used as the primary access to the church and was key to the new way finding strategy that clarified circulation routes to the church hall and throughout the ancillary spaces.
