The design concerns a new, from the ground-up residential building in Chios. The building consists of four apartments, scattered on the ground floor and the first floor. The underground spaces are used for garages and warehouses.
Due to the strong difference of height between the plot and the street, the building volume is placed at a distance from the eastern boundary in order to ensure access to it through a staggered development of green terraces, the walls of which are built on a slope in order to ‘welcome’ visitors smoothly.
The location and shape of the plot played a decisive role in the composition of the building. Due to its elongated shape with the narrow side facing the sea and the landscape, the residences are arranged so that all four can enjoy the view through the communal spaces of their interior.
All the residences are structured around a central core, that of the communal staircase, which leads you to all levels.
An important factor for the organization of the individual spaces of each residence was the orientation. Therefore, the northern volume of the building ‘slides’ to the west in order to ‘cut off’ the north to the private spaces of the southern volume allowing constant lighting to the common areas while at the same time its own private spaces benefit from the south through large openings.
Desiring to harmonize the building with its environment, a large part of its shell is composed of natural materials that form the facades (stone, wood).
One of the priorities for the building was to be surrounded by dense vegetation, which is the reason why cast material is used just on the necessary parts of the site to ensure access and the development of basic outdoor activities. In this way, integration into the natural environment is achieved, which was the main focus of the entire study.
