Jackie XU Private Residence stands as a testament to the enduring bond between its owner, a cherished friend, and her two beloved canine companions—a 4-year-old Schnauzer and a 2-year-old Italian Greyhound. Within this residence, the emotional connection shared between owner and pets serves as the cornerstone of our design philosophy.
This residence, akin to a love letter exchanged between them, embodies a space where mutual reliance and unwavering support intertwine. Throughout the design process, we meticulously delved into the nuances of canine and human perception, particularly in regards to space and color.
Our research revealed the distinct differences in color perception between humans and canines. While humans typically perceive a broad spectrum of colors, dogs, with their more limited range of cone cells, experience a narrower palette. Leveraging this understanding, we curated a color scheme rooted in the "yellow and blue" spectrum, carefully selecting architectural materials that resonate with both human and canine sensibilities.
Materials such as teakwood, brass, bronze, grey oak, warm grey sisal, Prussian blue mosaic, grey terrazzo, and dark brown matte aluminum panels were thoughtfully chosen to ensure a harmonious visual experience for both parties. By crafting an environment that elicits analogous visual responses, we aimed to foster an emotional connection that transcends species boundaries.
As of 2023, China has witnessed a surge in pet ownership, with an estimated 220 million pets and a solo-living population of 150 million. Against this backdrop, the Jackie XU Private Residence emerges as a pioneering project in Shanghai—a city lacking in canine-centric facilities. It redefines the concept of indoor living by placing emphasis on visual and emotional connections, paving the way for a new era of owner-pet interaction.
