The living room stands as a central and multifaceted space within the broader architectural context. Situated immediately beyond the entrance foyer, it fulfills a dynamic role as a hub for various social, recreational, and relaxation activities. In a deliberate departure from conventional interior arrangements, our design ethos promotes a sense of spatial liberation and continuous flow.

Jackie XU Private Residence I A Love Letter to My Dogs

Jackie XU Private Residence stands as a testament to the enduring bond between its owner, a cherished friend, and her two beloved canine companions—a 4-year-old Schnauzer and a 2-year-old Italian Greyhound. Within this residence, the emotional connection shared between owner and pets serves as the cornerstone of our design philosophy.

This residence, akin to a love letter exchanged between them, embodies a space where mutual reliance and unwavering support intertwine. Throughout the design process, we meticulously delved into the nuances of canine and human perception, particularly in regards to space and color.

Our research revealed the distinct differences in color perception between humans and canines. While humans typically perceive a broad spectrum of colors, dogs, with their more limited range of cone cells, experience a narrower palette. Leveraging this understanding, we curated a color scheme rooted in the "yellow and blue" spectrum, carefully selecting architectural materials that resonate with both human and canine sensibilities.

Materials such as teakwood, brass, bronze, grey oak, warm grey sisal, Prussian blue mosaic, grey terrazzo, and dark brown matte aluminum panels were thoughtfully chosen to ensure a harmonious visual experience for both parties. By crafting an environment that elicits analogous visual responses, we aimed to foster an emotional connection that transcends species boundaries.

As of 2023, China has witnessed a surge in pet ownership, with an estimated 220 million pets and a solo-living population of 150 million. Against this backdrop, the Jackie XU Private Residence emerges as a pioneering project in Shanghai—a city lacking in canine-centric facilities. It redefines the concept of indoor living by placing emphasis on visual and emotional connections, paving the way for a new era of owner-pet interaction.

This strategic placement fosters a convivial atmosphere for family and guests alike. Notably, the absence of a dominant central pendant light fixture contributes significantly to the spatial experience. Instead, we have opted for an array of discreet lighting elements, carefully integrated to cast a gentle and diffused illumination. This approach not only minimizes visual clutter but also serves to blur the perceivable edges of the interior volume, imbuing the space with an understated yet immersive ambiance.
Furthermore, the living room's architectural composition introduces a striking interplay of materials on two opposing walls. This calculated juxtaposition delineates and defines discrete functional zones within the living space, creating a harmonious yet visually stimulating interior. These material contrasts, coupled with carefully considered sightlines, elicit an impression of spatial fluidity and seamless integration between the indoor and outdoor realms, rendering a captivating and...

At the same time, we also considered the spatial connection between the owner and the dog in the design, introducing an innovative design called the 'doggy door.' This special door allows the dog to come and go freely into the owner's room without needing to pass through the main door, thus avoiding inconvenience to the owner. At the same time, it also allows the dog to quickly reach the owner's side, providing them with more companionship.

The evolutionary lineage of dogs, tracing back to nocturnal hunters, is pivotal in elucidating these discrepancies. These ancestors predominantly relied on pursuit and pursuit of mobile prey during low-light conditions, leading to a heightened sensitivity to moving stimuli. This heightened visual acuity in dogs, especially in dim or nocturnal environments, can be attributed to the abundance of rod cells within their retinas, surpassing human counterparts by over fivefold.
However, it is noteworthy that their visual acumen diminishes concerning relatively static and nearby objects, a divergence attributed to the thickness of the canine lens, which is twice that of humans. This structural variance, while permitting maximal light ingress, compromises the canine eye’s capacity for accommodation, accounting for only a fraction (approximately 1/5 to 1/3) of the human eye’s adaptability. The ceiling design is the most distinctive and representative element of our...

This structural variance, while permitting maximal light ingress, compromises the canine eye’s capacity for accommodation, accounting for only a fraction (approximately 1/5 to 1/3) of the human eye’s adaptability. The ceiling design is the most distinctive and representative element of our company's style in this project. The curved surfaces of the ceiling are consistent with the design principles of the walls. Due to the visual characteristics of dogs, we have rounded all the right angles.
