Project: GWANGJU LIBRARY
📍 Gwangju, South Korea
The International Competition of City Main Library in Gwangju, an exciting endeavor that symbolizes Gwangju's entry into a new era. This competition aimed to design a public library that will serve as the main hub of knowledge and information in Gwangju, South Korea.
As the city moves forward, embracing development, regeneration, and administrative priorities, the library will play a repository in providing access to books, knowledge, and information. It will not only serve as a repository of books, but also as a dynamic space where new levels of knowledge and information are accumulated, shared, and reproduced by its users.
The competition site itself has a unique history. It was formerly a garbage incineration site, representing an urban infrastructure of the developmental period. This remnant of the past presents an opportunity for a creative approach, offering insight into the periodic changes and intrinsic value that shape modern society.
The project proposal utilizes modular cubic volumes as an analogy to the Korean Kan measuring system, emphasizing proportion and balance. The design includes a spacious and transparent interior, where programmatic cubes house books and various shared activities. Each cube symbolizes the energy of roots, culminating in the growth of trees and vegetation atop them. This concept envisions a future where humans and the earth coexist harmoniously.
The proposed spaces are inspired by Biophilia, integrating nature into the interior of the building. This creates a seamless connection between the interior and the exterior, evoking a continuous sensation of being surrounded by a forest. Nature becomes a central element that enriches the sensory experience of the users, fostering a sense of tranquility and unity. These spaces provide a conducive environment that meets the users' needs while promoting a calm and serene atmosphere.
Integration of culture, tradition, knowledge, nature, technology, sustainability, and functionality into a realm of peaceful harmony.
