The "In-Between House" is a five hundreds and fifty square meters house, located in a residential area of Bangkok. The character of the area is a low rise residential area that have six meters road that connects all the houses. The initial idea of this project is to connect a three-generations family together by using function arrangement to connect the family members together and the aesthetic of the architecture comes from a formation of the interaction of architecture and the surrounding.
The relationship of users is arranged by placing living space of the three generations on each floor. First floor is to gather all the family members, Second is for the second and the third generation. The third floor is for the kids to do their homework while they can peep down to the first floor when the grandma calls for the meals and is placed on the dining table. It is a simple idea that the interior space of the house is connected vertically together and creates privacy by splitting levels of each user apart. Splitting levels still keeps the connectivity by the sense of hearing. It is the method of negotiation of privacy level, all the members are still living in the connecting space at the same time that they are having privacy as well.
The architectural appearance of the house is created from the interaction of the architecture and the surrounding. The program requirement compares to the building plot is quite dense, and the neighborhood is quite close from all the boundaries. The elements of the repetitive planar system are introduced to protect the visibility from the front and create in-between space between solid walls and cast shadow on top of another layer. Natural light and ventilation penetrates through the cavity while the frontal visibility remains solid, layers of porosity live in the solid appearance.
With the idea of connecting family members together by function arrangement to create internal connectivity, and blocking visibility from outside with the system of the repetitive planar elements. The interior space remains a single volume, while the effect of architecture plays with natural light and shadow that reflect natural ambience and keep changing through the movement of the sun.
