DL 1961 Headquarters and Showroom

DL1961 is a gut renovation and full design project for the global premium denim company DL1961’s new showroom and office headquarters, located in a building that previously operated as an industrial printing press. Considering analysis of DL1961’s design process and office structure, Studio MBM/ Maurizio Bianchi Mattioli organized the various functions of the space around a central showroom. Taking advantage of the existing column grid, the showroom acts as a core object at the center with meeting rooms and offices carved from its perimeter. The geometry of the space is dictated by these carved spaces and emphasized by light reveals where the aluminum lattice ceiling meets peripheral spaces. The design strategically integrates showroom and office space, literally and physically putting DL1961’s product at the center of the process. Maintaining DL1961’s fierce commitment to sustainable manufacturing processes, Studio MBM carefully selected materials for their ecofriendly properties. The reflective aluminum walls, and translucent polycarbonate surfaces not only optimize natural light reflection within the central showroom object, but also distribute light from its exterior surfaces to perimeter workspaces. Custom marble tables were designed to mimic the carved geometries of the space and add textural contrast, representing moments of pause for creative informal meeting.
