Point of Action

How do we SEE each other?

New Yorkers move through the city sharing space with people from the far reaches of each borough and from numerous cultural and economic backgrounds but don’t really know each other.  Eye contact is avoided at all costs. The humanity of the other is erased with invisibility.

Point of Action uses 6-foot circles painted on the plaza  to create hot spots.  Residents, workers, tourists and other passersby are framed by the circles on the ground and the metal frames around them. Ropes weave through the frames and part, like a curtain, figuratively pulled aside, to make room. They make room for the viewer to take the spotlight, make room for them to connect with other viewers across the plaza and make room for them to take action as they move out and beyond. The installation is spread out through the north and south plazas allowing socially-distanced engagement.    However, concentric circles ripple out from each spot, eventually connecting with the other circles across the plaza.

The lighting strengthens the spotlight as LED light is emitted from the halo frame above.  Each piece is a unique combination of bent metal and rope encouraging viewers to visit each one or find their favorite.
