NEOBRIDGE Hotel, located in Caojiadu, Shanghai, is an urban renewal project. In this design, we have transformed the disadvantages of the original building into unique spatial experiences through thoughtful design.
The original building had low ceiling heights, with the lobby directly connecting to the street, and the basement being enclosed without natural light. To address these issues, we made the decision to completely open up the ground floor, creating a sunken lounge with multi-floor height, while constructing a small arched bridge in the middle. The hotel lobby is hidden on the other side of the bridge. Guests must cross the bridge to enter the hotel, as if completing a ritual, becoming the center of attention.
Underneath the bridge, we have created a third space between the hotel and city, known as "Under the Bridge Bar,". Various activities, exhibitions, and even film and television shoots take place here, expanding the hotel's operational possibilities and adding memorable experiences.
The material selection revolves around the theme of the bridge and water: the underground ceiling features corrugated mirrored stainless steel panels, suggesting a water surface; sunlight passing through the specially designed handrails casts ripples of light on the bridge floor; the walls showcase concrete with waterfall-like patterns, symbolizing the convergence of flowing water under the bridge. This is exactly what we envision - people gathering and socializing under the bridge. The sunken space also ensures privacy, making it impossible to see the bustling pub from the street. Curiosity often tempts passersby to peek below.
The exterior facade of NEOBRIDGE is transformed using glass bricks to balance natural lighting and privacy. The layout of the rooms involves a delicate balance with existing pipelines and utility shafts in the limited space. Due to the relatively low ceiling height, the original exposed concrete ceiling is incorporated directly. No blinds can be found in this hotel, since all air vents are cleverly concealed within material joints.
The interior design is filled with surprises, such as windows between rooms offering glimpses of the bar and people walking on the bridge. The most secluded room features a bay window with glass reflecting the outdoor scenery. The walls separating the courtyard are intentionally left with gaps, allowing unexpected encounters with neighboring gazes.
Additionally, we have designed the hotel's brand logo and wayfinding labels, extending the design concept to every detail. Our aim is to create a unique spatial experience for people.
