San Francisco Flat

For this San Francisco home, completed in late 2018, Maydan Architects magically transformed an aging 1930’s building into a modern gem, with a focus on luxury and functionality. At 2,781 square feet, the 4 bed/5 bath home is the entire first floor of a building in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

“Angles” was the primary theme for the design scheme, with playful uses of angles used throughout the home - in the kitchen, the bookcases, the desks mirrors, storage, etc. With this, Maydan created a series of custom elements for the home including shelving, desks, and the vanities and cabinets throughout the house. Using luxurious materials such as corian, walnut, large slabs of tile, and french oak, they created a clean modern color palette of neutrals, whites, and grays that emphasizes the angular elements.

Maydan Architects completed a full remodel of the space, acting both as architecture and design firm and taking the interior down to the bare studs, only keeping the shell of the floor. Tasked with emphasizing the stunning views on the lot, including large communal spaces for entertaining and family time, and building 4 bedrooms, an office, and a large kitchen, Maydan Architects created a modern, minimalist, multifunctional, and classy home that is also cozy and comfortable.

Overcoming challenges with noise ordinances, the age of the building, and the size of the space in relation to the multitude of room-types needed, Maydan Architect decompartmentalized the original space, opening up the rooms to one another and creating access to the stunning water and mountain views. The firm used 900SF for a single open space, encapsulating the kitchen, living room, and dining room - with a view visible in each. A four panel glass wall is included in the design so that the kitchen can be cordoned off for cooking. Similarly, the library is able to transition from library to bedroom, with a bed folding out from the shelves Maydan Architects designed, in the event that a fourth bedroom is needed.

Maydan Architects exclusively used zero VOC paints and replaced the original pane windows with energy efficient double pane windows to increase energy efficiency.
