York has famously been at the forefront of new innovations in confectionery for almost 300 years. Wishing to build on this legacy and fuel ongoing leadership in the sector, DLA Design were appointed by Nestlé to provide interdisciplinary architectural services for the expansion of their global Product Technology Centre.
Following full planning approval in September 2011, DLA produced a modern, dynamic office building with high design quality, sympathetic to the function of the facility as the research and development hub for Nestlé’s diverse chocolate and confectionery product portfolio. The next generation of talent is also trained at the centre, giving them their first taste of the sector. These overlapping functions were reflected in the design, with an extension concept of a ‘wrapping form’ enveloping the main entrance, walls and roof soffits.
The theme continues inside, and an internally glazed, tree-lined street links original and new spaces. This creates a focal point and circulation device, which provides opportunities for chance interaction and stimulating informal staff breakout areas within the office space. Investment in the industrial production space included an extended state-of-the-art sensory testing facility and miniature factory.
DLA Design’s work on the pioneering Product Technology Centre was recognised at the national BCO Awards 2013 and the York Design Awards of the same year.
