Neil Dusheiko Architects transform a commercial showroom into a family home.

The Danish client had owned the building for over 35 years, using it as a workshop and garment showroom wanted to radically transform the space into a contemporary, light-filled home with a variety of social spaces for himself, his wife and visiting guests. The home's exterior has been upgraded but retains a Georgian aesthetic that fits well with its surroundings in the Bayswater Conservation Area. Inside the home, the changes are more dramatic - with the originally cramped rooms reimagined with Douglas fir beams, a bright top-lit central stair, expressed timber surfaces, and a material pallette that reveals the client’s Danish origins.

The owners’ brief was to create a welcoming family home; perfect for entertaining, relaxing and cooking. In its former condition light was restricted due to the overshadowing of the one primary façade by the adjacent hotel and nearby church. Despite the tightness of the footprint and prevailing constraints, the house is bathed in natural light. The central stair core is glazed on top-lit, bringing light deep into the first floor level where the main living spaces fill the entire floor giving a sense of expansive space. The kitchen and sitting room can be linked or separated depending on the need. On the uppermost level new dormers work to introduce natural light and ensure that the principal bedrooms have a good outlook onto the mews. Both bedrooms on this floor have their own washroom facilities with one of the two having an enclosed sun terrace, complete with built-in planters and timber battens and exposed Douglas Fir beams

The home is future-proofed to be accessible for all. At entry level, a lift has been provided to create easy access to the upper floors. An accessible bedroom with easy access to a small kitchenette has also been provided on the ground floor, which will double as a guest bedroom in the short term.

As well as sourcing certain finishes from Denmark, the owners actively collaborated with the designers to choose elements of interior design on show; furniture by Montana, Carl Hansen, Klimt,Hans J. Wegner and lights by Louis Poulsen. Throughout the project, both the architect and owner had a mutual respect for natural, sustainable materials and the integration of abundant natural light.
