Turtle Cove Residence

The Turtle Cove Residence is a gathering place for a multi-generational family. The house is adjacent to Bridal Cave, which has been owned by members of the family since its discovery. The cave is rated as one of the most scenic caves in America and includes more onyx formations than any other known cave or cavern in the world. The house is 2,000 SF, but sleeps up to 10 adults. Though the house is small, the client wanted to provide separation between spaces to allow for simultaneous congregations of people engaged in different activities. One group might be playing board games, while another is eating, while even others are reading or sleeping. To provide for this level of programmatic flexibility, the house is broken into 3 zones, with each zone separated by a transitional space. The first transitional space separates the master bedroom from the house by an extended corridor and breezeway bridge. Adjacent to the bridge is a Zen garden and meditation deck. The second transitional space separates the guest quarters (or bunk house) from the main living area. The transitional space is an indoor/outdoor dining area that can be fully closed off from either side of the house while remaining open to the outside deck and lake access.

The project pays homage to contemporary Japanese architecture through its openness to the natural surroundings and our use of material. The building is clad in a black metal with warm wood accents. Cantilevering eaves are supported by exposed posts and beams. The landscape (unfinished in the above photos) will include bamboo and rock gardens to complement the architecture.
