Hotel am Nordkopf, Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg central hotel

Wolfsburg is known for its automotive industry attracting customers and visitors from all over the world. The hotel is situated opposite to the train station in the central area called Nordkopf, next to a large movie theatre complex and to the headquarters of a national health insurance company. The town centre, unlike other typical centres in Germany is not based entirely on a medieval concept, but as a 20th-century modern typology. The existing road system of the nineteen-thirties defined the parameters of this urban development.

The design of the building incorporates a U-shaped block, a semi-public glass lobby and cantilevering hotel floors. The structure itself is a four-star hotel with over 200 rooms, spa area and conference spaces as well as a ballroom. Publicly accessible areas within the hotel include a restaurant and a bar on the south-side and a sky bar towards the station in the north. The spacious glass hall of the hotel lobby and the café facing the station attract views from the Willy-Brandt-Platz and act as a connector between station and city. Both are easily accessible from the walkway or a side driveway. The rooms of the hotel are spacious and designed with an open plan bathroom. The parking lot with approximately 100 spaces is located in the basement and connected to another underground parking facility underneath the pedestrian zone. The hotel deliveries are managed via a lateral side road on the west-side.

The building is cladded with dark and light grey aluminum sandwich panels (Alucobond) and structured by metal profiles, emphasizing a horizontal streamline movement. The windows are grouped with dark glass panels forming horizontal ribbon windows. With its tone and volume the structure corresponds well with its architectural surroundings. The building explores the concept of contemporary architectural language and aims to create a sense of comfort. The hotel is operated by the Spanish Meliá Hotels International group as an INNSIDE Hotel.
