The Power of Three Project, Allen Theatre

Working in partnership with PlayhouseSquare, the Cleveland Play House and Cleveland State University, Westlake Reed Leskosky designed a renovation and expansion for the historic Allen Theatre. The transformation, at a cost of $26 million, features three new theatres created within the 81,500 sf Allen Theatre and 44,000 sf continguous addition.

Housed in the existing Allen Theatre, the Main Stage Theatre and its lobby transitions the existing 1920s-era 3,000-seat venue into an intimate 500-seat proscenium theatre featuring honey-colored wood veneer and copper-colored textiles as well as newly inserted acoustical elements.

A Second Stage Theatre and Lab Theatre were developed in an addition inserted between the Allen and Ohio Theatres. This addition's façade design was inspired by a stage that overlooks the street. A pedestrian connector to the garage was reworked to a new location, and features an "inner streetscape." Walking along this interior thoroughfare, patrons and passers-by see into the Lab Theatre lobby, experience the historic brick of the existing Allen auditorium, and pass under dramatic flying bridges connecting the original Allen balcony, before moving into the new Second Stage Theatre lobby.

The Second Stage Lobby features modern materials and theatrical lighting to heighten the theatre-goer's sense of excitement before a performance. The 300-seat Second Stage Theatre is designed as a transitional space that can be configured in a number of ways. The 150-seat Lab Theatre, a traditional black box, serves as a venue for educational events and theatrical performances.
