SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF VOLKER GIENCKE
Volker Giencke was born in Wolfsberg, Carinthia, in 1947. Following his studies of architecture and
philosophy in Graz and Vienna he collaborated with Merete Mattern / Munich-Berlin and Günther
Domenig / Graz-Vienna, amongst others. In 1981 he opened Giencke & Company architectural office
in Graz in 1981, as well as offices in Seville in 1990 and Riga in 2004. The company has partner
offices in Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Paris and Vienna.
Since 1992 Volker Giencke teaches as Professor for Architectural Design at the Institute of Design,
University of Innsbruck, where he founded ./studio3 – the Institute for Experimental Architecture in
2000. Added to this are international teaching assignments and lectures like at Yale School of
Architecture/New Haven, UCL Bartlett School of Architecture/London, Columbia University/NY,
SCIArch Southern California Institute of Architecture/Los Angeles and at Universidad de Buenos Aires.
Volker Giencke is, amongst others, member of the Austrian Architectural Society, the Association of
Austrian Architects, the Association of Latvian Architects as well as Honorary Member of the Union of
German Architects BDA and member of the European Academy of Science and Art.

prizewinner of the Shinkenshiku Residential Design Competition /Tokyo, Austrian National Housing
Design Award, Constructec Prize /Hannover, Fischer-von-Erlach Prize; Architectural Award of
Carinthia 1991 and 2000; Dedalo Minosse International Prize Vicenza 2002 + 2006; Architecture Prize of Styria 1987 and 1998; Prize of the ZV (Central Association of Austrian Architects) 1987, 1991, 1994 and 1998.
