Carl Turner Architects is an award-winning, architectural studio, that believes in creating thought-provoking and well-crafted architectural projects. As a studio we are creative, responsive and not afraid to take a risk when it feels right. As a consequence we have found ourselves playing the role of not only architect but also developer, curator and maker.
With a passionate belief that architecture can enrich lives and make a difference to those that use and engage with it, we always start by examining the context in which we are working and respond with design solutions that we feel are appropriate and right to the situation we are presented with.
Founded in 2006 by Carl Turner, the practice has established a reputation for delivering high impact projects often producing innovative design solutions despite limited resources. We work with a diverse range of clients including local authorities, arts and cultural organisations, not for profits and commercial developers.
Our projects range in size from a shipping container project at Hackney City Farm to a 10,000 sqm arts academy in Peckham. Our expertise lies in the fields of housing, culture, workplace design and urban planning and we pride ourselves on being able to engage with and involve a wide variety of communities and stakeholders in the process of design.
The practice has worked overseas with the British Council in Lisbon and more recently with RIBA and Moleskin in Shanghai. We have also tackled very large existing buildings such as Great Barn Farm, the longest listed UK tithe barn.
The studio has been widely recognised for its work, winning the Royal Institute of British Architect’s Manser Medal for Slip House in 2013, awarded each year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. We were announced as one of the best offices producing small projects at the Architect of the Year Awards in 2012, AYA house winners in 2013 and are RIBA London Regional and National Award winners for our projects in Brixton.
