Charleston is a small city with a rich history and much of that history can be told through its architecture. The numerous private homes, churches and commercial buildings from the last three centuries are not only historically significant, but also beautiful examples of architectural design. Charlestonians were among the most forward thinking Americans when they took measures to preserve and protect their heritage as early as the 1800s. And, while Charleston has had its share of disasters, from the great fire of 1861, to the 1886 earthquake, and Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the resilience and determination of the citizenry is clear from the unique cityscape that exists today.
