Stephen Alton founded Stephen Alton Architect, P.C. in 1993 in New York City. The firm designs retail, residential, and hotel projects worldwide. Alton and the collaborators at his firm possess a broad range of expertise in the fields of architecture and interior design, and have a background in the development of both large and small commercial and residential projects from inception through completion. They possess a deep-seeded philosophical and implemental commitment to each new project, and are known as innovators in lighting design, planning, and for their unique and sensitive uses of materials.
Some of SAA's projects include multi-unit residential developments in NYC and New Jersey for developers such as Archstone Smith, Avalon Bay Communities, Gotham Organization, and CSFB Private Equity Group. Hotel projects include master planning and a new restaurant for the Ritz-Carlton San Juan, the redesign of typical suites for Ian Schrager's Hudson Hotel, lobby and suites for Hotel Wales, and design leadership for the Hotel Adagio in San Francisco. Their portfolio also includes numerous residential projects, restaurants, and store and prototype designs for such prestigious retail outlets as Chaps Ralph Lauren, Sacco Shoes, Ligne Roset Furniture, Genesco, and Donna Karan.
The firm's projects have received several design awards and other forms of recognition in the USA and Europe. They have been featured on TV and in books and magazines, including Fox Five News, Terrance Conran's on Design, Hamptons Havens (Bulfinch Press), Architectural Record, Interior Design, Elle Décor, House and Garden, House Beautiful, I.D.
