The Cabrillo residence is an addition to an existing structure within the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. The original 800 square-foot structure became the private areas of the new house which includes an office, spare bedroom, powder room, and master suite. The 1,200 square-foot addition provided a carport, entry, kitchen, and dining, living, and support areas.
The addition slips past the existing structure on the east to create an indoor/outdoor living experience with views to the Pacific Ocean, and then unravels on the west with the roof sliding away from the enclosed volume to form a carport and covered entry with framed openings to the sky. The material palette of stained cedar, walnut, and concrete was chosen to weather gracefully in the marine environment.
