The Lake Jasper House, designed by Architecturama, stands in the midst of a forested haven in Chertsey, Canada. The Quebec-based architecture firm has thoughtfully combined a minimalist aesthetic with maximum functionality, optimizing the use of the house’s interior space. In keeping with their manifesto, Architecturama has approached their design with the intention “to have a present, living and enthusiastic architecture that engages the senses,” in addition to reducing an environmental footprint in any way conceivable.
In regards to the home’s thoughtful design, a representative of Architecturama has stated, “With [the particular] shape and advantageous ratio of envelope to usable volume, the structure promotes energy efficiency and economical use of materials. The shape also made a smaller footprint possible.” The cube structure optimizes bioclimactic potential with a south-facing façade: a large set of windows maximizes passive solar heating (not to mentioned an amazing view), while a large exterior overhang aims to prevent overheating in the summer. A staircase lines the South side of the exterior, highlighted by a vivid blue railing that Architecturama has noted "turns 90 degrees on the east side and penetrates inside the house."

The interior offers 140 square meters of functional floor space, equipped with movable bleacher-style benches that are built into the home’s main living area (a concept that provides an array of possibilities for transforming the room). The modular bench system is extremely versatile; movable blocks clearly act as seating, in addition to providing filters, backrests, end tables, room dividers, etc.

Conceptually, this Chertsey residence is meant to harmoniously coincide with the rural landscape that surrounds it. The structure’s geometric design is striking against the organic lines of its natural environment, yet the white cedar tongue-and-groove siding and thin columns beautifully mimic the trees that blanket the property. With careful consideration given to functionality and optimal viewing experience, Architecturama has created a tranquil getaway for all those visiting the Lake Jasper House.
Architecturama's Lake Jasper House was recently nominated for the Prix d’excellence en architecture 2015 by the Ordre des architectes du Québec.
