FORUM is a user-generated space where citizens create their own civic space for meeting, sharing, and creating. The building provides the framework and structure for events of democracy.
FORUM is a “messy utopia” where the idealized form and rigid geometric structure can be maintained or denied by the individual. It is therefore not prohibited to modify the original design; it is, in fact, encouraged. Users will spontaneously modify the space by constructing temporary walls, erecting tents, planting gardens, or simply gathering for a meal.
Ukraine is entering a new phase of civic ownership in government. However, examining Ukraine’s history it is clear that this is only one of many such transitions. FORUM is already looking toward the next revolution. This project is one of cautious optimism. The goal is to provide Ukrainians with the public space they have earned through their painstaking and heroic efforts on Maidan square.
FORUM extends the public sphere into the vertical realm of traditionally held private space. It disrupts the balance of power and emphasizes the collective individual over authoritarians.
Inspired by the make-shift structures of the EuroMaidan movement, FORUM allows participants to create and modify the space needed at any given time. Users are encouraged to “hack” the lattice framework as the structure for additional materials. Citizens can combine found objects, traditional textile fabrics, or mass customized parts together as walls and ceilings. From planting flowers in spring to lighting candles in January, FORUM provides space for mourning, celebration, democracy, and education.
FORUM is a structure inspired by the courage, unity, and hope of those who supported Maidan from all parts of Ukraine. Every citizen of Ukraine deserves a public space where their voices can be heard, their actions can be seen, and their dreams can be realized. FORUM is that place.
During the EuroMaidan revolution protesters gained control over several buildings on or near the public square. Protesters clearly desired a distinctly urban presence beyond that of the exposed ground level plaza. FORUM provides this vertical public infrastructure for use by the people that is not under private ownership. Its doors never lock- indeed, it has no doors. It contains a few key cultural programs, surrounded by interstitial open space for occupation and dialogue. It is a continuation of the public square, yet, its vertical nature deems it something different as well. A vertical space allows for great views, hierarchy, and meaning to the event occurring there. Thus FORUM will describe that active participation of the citizens who are standing witness to future events. It is not simply the setting for the next revolution. It is the revolution.
