The Public Theater at Astor Place

Ennead’s involvement with the Public Theater began with a building-wide master plan completed in 1998. This long-range plan called for renovations to this landmark building that allow the Public to accommodate new audiences and an expanded staff. The work occurred in multiple phases over a decade. Phase One, completed in 1999, included the renovation of an existing space on the first floor to create a cabaret-style theater with a seating capacity of 199, the creation of rehearsal space and dressing rooms and various adaptations to make both public and private spaces in the theater fully ADA accessible. Completed in Spring 2001, Phase Two comprised the renovation of administrative spaces and provided classroom and rehearsal space for the Public’s Shakespeare Laboratory program. Phase Three, completed in 2002, created additional production support spaces, including dressing rooms and a green room, scenery and costume building shops and storage and production department office space. The redesign of the exterior entry, lobby and associated food service and retail support spaces and the creation of a new patrons’ lounge, ticket booth and other amenities was completed in 2012.
