the Art Boxes

As part of this Urban Design studio, we focused on the planned expansion of Staten Island Arts into this unoccupied and neglected site at the Staten Island Ferry stop. Site analysis included the study of volume of Ferry passengers and the obstacles to and sequence of pedestrian flow to the site from the stop. The design rehabilitates the existing brick warehouse while making key incisions & additions that engage the large adjacent public plaza. The additions are organized around a a new, double-wide processional stair which climbs from the plaza all the way to main gallery, with connections to the key new programmatic additions. This includes triple height artist in residence studios, a theater that can convert between indoor-outdoor use for open air performance, office & admin space with conference room, central sculpture courtyard, and new gallery space with views to Manhattan.
