Maggie's Interim

New interim site for Maggie's Cancer Centre at Velindre.

Our building is located in a corner of the hospital’s car park, and the site is an unusual triangular shape. Our idea is to make a building whose form and materiality reflect the surrounding landscape. The building form takes on the topography of the local hills, which is achieved by superimposing a simple repeating pitched roof perpendicular to the hypotenuse of the site. This creates an irregular saw-tooth roof at the principal elevations and make the building look like a mountain range.

The building is a simple domestic type timber frame clad in corrugated cor-ten steel that rusts to a bright orange that replicates the bracken of the hills. The building is entered via a small garden space that acts as a deep threshold between the bleakness of the car park and the quiet reflection of the interior. At the heart of the building is the cwtch, a tall and intimate roof-lit space.
