Ready to take off from the top of a hill on the outskirts of Patras city, Stealth House was designed to avoid detection and reduce reflection. The unparallel views of the Ionian Sea and the discreet comfort led the design process.
Standing on a hill with rare and special characteristics, we managed to combine the natural integration of a subterranean house with the passive, low observable features of an airplane explicitly designed around the stealth technology.
We were asked to design a duplex house with two identical spaces that can accommodate their users in full privacy. That clear demand by the client is mirrored in the volumes and the axle separating the structures. Six people per house can be hosted in comfort.
Each house sums a total built up area of approximately 200m2 and is divided to subterranean and ground floor spaces. Each house is also enhanced with a private swimming pool and some extra auxiliary spaces, used for mechanical installations and warehouses. Two out of the three bedrooms and the communal spaces of the houses have been placed at the subterranean part of the structure aiming to comfort temperature conditions throughout the year. Looking for serenity and privacy, the master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom are the only spaces that stand on the ground floor, overlooking the sea.
The previews cultivation of pomegranate trees and vineyards on the field, inspired us to use the same blend of colors to our new establishment. We also dressed in cork all the exposed facades of Stealth House. We decided to use the cork coating not only for aesthetic reasons but also for its environmental friendly properties. The use of geothermal energy is a crucial part of the performance strategy not only for heating and cooling but also for potable water and irrigation.
