The project background of the Dryland Research and Training Centre in Isiolo stems from the need to address the challenges faced by rural communities in arid
and semi-arid regions of Kenya. The emphasis on irrigated agriculture has neglected dryland farming, leading to food insecurity and the underutilization of cultivable land in rain-fed areas.
The proposed centre aims to provide education, research, and technology development for sustainable dryland resource management. It will focus on promoting climate-smart agriculture, drought-tolerant crops, livestock management, and soil conservation to enhance productivity and economic independence for rural
communities.
The centre will facilitate collaboration between researchers, learners, government agencies, and local farmers to address climate change, food insecurity, drought,
and famine and other challenges in the dryland region
