Located on one of the interior canals of Siesta Key, this project sits low to the ground while opening up to the canal view. Diagrammatically, the project begins with the standard ‘mass’ of a home, solid in a way that creates privacy from the street both within the home and for the backyard beyond. But this solidity is most needed for bedrooms, not all of the living spaces. Pulling those ‘solid’ spaces away from each other, towards the side property lines (the primary suite on one end, guest bedrooms on the other) leaves an opening in the middle, a gap in which to live. This gap is then covered by a sloping roof, tilting upwards to the pool terrace and the canal beyond.

Underneath the sloped roof, walls of floor to ceiling glass contrast with the solid masses of the bedrooms, and create a sense of being within a pavilion rather than enclosed within solid walls. This type of shaded, covered space allows ambient daylighting to fill the space without direct, harsh sunlight - an ideal condition in the Florida climate.
