To a new hydropower

The original building is a rebuild hydropower plant designed by becker architeckten in 2010. It is located on Iller river, in Kempten city where is the oldest urban settlement in Germany. The building’s fluid and sculptural shape is more attracting for people. However, it is complex in shape, but singular in program, and it is still an isolated infrastructure away from neighborhood.

In recent decades, hydropower plants have drawn public criticizing such as disrupting aquatic ecosystems and uprooting human population. Also, their primitive and practical appearance are keeping people away.
Infrastructure today should address larger issues of city revitalization, environmental issue, enhance our cities and be better places for people. This design will challenge the notion of a powerplant as a utilitarian infrastructure, trying to provoke the stereotype of practical hydropower plants. The big idea is Cojoineration (conjoin + cogeneration). In city scale, the powerplant joins with the cities’ landmarks by shopping trial and tourist river walk. In site scale, the powerplant joins with people and neighborhood, and the manmade joins with nature.
