Shadow Catcher, Warsaw

The Palace of Science and Culture was presented to Poland from the Soviet peoples in 1952, an unwanted gift from Joseph Stalin. Since its opening in 1955, it has stood in the centre of Warsaw as a monument to communism and a reminder of past subordination and powerlessness. The area around the palace, Plac Defilad, played host to numerous communist military parades during the 1950s. Today the Palace acts as a receptacle for these memories, which are projected onto the city by means of the building’s shadow. The project aims to ‘catch’ the buildings shadow and use it to form the basis of a new electronic landscape around the palace.
