Currently, flag plaza’s park administration offices are in the form of a simple volume that houses bathrooms, offices, and nothing more. A very functional and rational response to an administrative building, but could it be more?

This design attempts to bring life to the interior and exterior spaces together, allowing visitors & workers alike to enjoy the enclosure structure as part of the park’s natural surroundings.

Through a mixture of outdoor and indoor space, the redesigned structure strives to become functional, but also enjoyable by creating direct experiences with the natural surroundings. In addition to the required administrative offices, the proposed design also includes a public lunch area, an observatory balcony, and an outdoor mixed-use area. These intermediary programs strive to add purpose and meaning to the structure. Although the administrative offices will remain, they are also redesigned to allow for a positive work experience, providing more sunlight and connecting the inhabitant to nature like the rest of the structure. Through shared experiences, these programs strive to add meaning to the structure.

As a visitor steps toward flag plaza, the structure seems to reach out to them as the wooden decked floor begins to mesh with the earth. The dirt path slowly becomes synonymous with the wooden decking of the design. The pathway through the building is framed as well by wooden beams that extend upward and out. Visitors then step within the structural framework and the intention is that they remain in harmony with nature. The presence of trees, plants, and the earth intermingle around and through the design in an attempt to create a cohesive experience between structural design and organic nature.
