Designed as an aging-in-place residence for a couple seeking an urban lifestyle adjacent to walkable downtown neighborhoods, this renovation of a two-story existing brick building includes 3 bedrooms, office space, an elevator, roof deck patio, garage, and generous kitchen, dining, and living spaces. The design was guided by the importance of getting natural light into the long narrow brick shell. A bricked up facade was opened to become a patio with a screen designed by the client. Existing lot line window openings were opened up for new windows, and two large skylights were added to bring in light at double-height spaces. The design strategy also involved exposing the structure of the building as much as possible: the existing brick walls and additional structural steel grid supporting a new 2nd floor.
