The Duke Cancer Center is an integral piece of Cooper Robertson’s master plan for the Duke Medical Center and the most recent manifestation of a twenty-year working relationship between Duke and our team. Designed in collaboration with interior architects Tsoi/Kobus, the LEED-NC Gold building represents a new perspective on outpatient cancer care with environments that proactively promote recovery, provide family space, facilitate knowledge-sharing, and enable health care providers to focus on implementing individualized treatment plans. 

The Center connects to the inpatient Duke Medicine Pavilion through a new 2-story concourse and to the north end of the outpatient Duke Clinic, also designed by Cooper Robertson. The addition defines a new landscaped open space created as part of the project, the Medical Circle Healing Garden. The exterior character of the building combines finely detailed stone, varied fenestration, plentiful glazing, and metal paneling to complement the existing collegiate gothic architecture yet convey the state-of-the-art healing treatment provided inside. Major spaces have visual access to the gardens and ample daylight provided by a central atrium.
