HARAPPA - An online learning institute

The office space for Harappa, situated in Katwaria Sarai, New Delhi, is an online learning institution (a part of a digital university), that teaches foundational habits for the workplace through a unique system called the ‘Harappa Habits’. With a strong physical presence, the brand name augments a recall value to the technologically advances Harappan Civilization, that is known for its world-class planning efficiency and an extraordinary level of mass standardization.

The design of the office is derived from the notion of creating an encouraging and engaging space by breaking away from the restrictive and rigid office layouts. Taking cues from the Harappan courtyards as a place to meet, interact and exchange knowledge, the design defines a central court as the core, which manifests as a hub for exchange, around which varied functions, types and scales of workspaces are organized. The emphasis of the design around the central court as a space for interaction helps to overcome the physical and mental constrictive barriers that workplaces usually proliferate.

The Underlying Grid is used to derive the logo and the palindrome nature of the form, symbolic of multiple perspectives, becomes the spatial generator, as well as the inspiration at various levels, from the system of furniture, to the hardware. This forms the basis of a multi-faceted design that is interlaced with the perception of co-existence of various workplace principles. To avoid dull and closed spaces, ample daylight is brought inside the workplace and a view to the exteriors has been incorporated.

The height of the main space has been leveraged, where the space is rendered as an opportunity through the addition of a mezzanine floor in the resultant space that allows for varied types of workspaces that are nestled within a larger construct. This ideation is born out of the planning principles that are adopted for the civilization, wherein the houses were designed around an inner courtyard. Secondary spaces of exchange that are generated are crafted with glass, giving a feeling of openness. The space offers a structured yet fluid quality, which in every part of the office is reminiscent of the company’s strong brand identity and ethos.

Flooring design visually defines a distinct function in an open plan, adding to the distinct spaces and sentiments. The spatial quality is achieved through usage of transparent materials that create a state of tranquillity. The office retains the identity of the brand and the civilization ideology, yet takes a contemporary turn via works on the interior elements. The vibrancy of the design fosters and defines the cabin spaces through the use of brand colours.

The design tries to establish a visual connectivity through the fashioning of various levels, trying to tie the underlying concept of a grid and open office spaces. Bespoke intricate interior details have been integrated to upkeep the character of the Harappa Civilization. The driving force for the design has been the physical manifestation of the company’s USP- To make the world of work better. From its inception to its implementation, the design yields an ambience of productivity and vibrant work culture- enabling better workplaces.
