“A Modern House that Hugs You,” were the first words the client mentioned as the design intent. We were enamored by this concept, and translated the idea through the balance of scale, materiality, texture, and lighting. To balance proportion and programmatic desires, we approached the form by hierarchically massing the primary functions into a series of gabled structures stepping the residence back in height, with expansive glazing to capture the northern exposure. The single story principal wing and one and a half story living space flank a centralized entryway that embraces the resident with a human scale, and naturally warm palette. Utilizing rain chain water catchment systems, rooftop garden, and regional materials, the residence pays respect to the natural environment with passive and active sustainable strategies and climatically appropriate materials.
