An extraordinary Historic Restoration and Residential Design Build Project that transformed a dilapidated multi-unit apartment into a timeless modern residence.
A process that began with a Late Victorian Home in the Mapleton Hill Historic District of Boulder Colorado. A house with a crumbling foundation, collapsing walls, and an “unsalvageable” assessment from numerous architects, engineers and contractors.
As designer, builder and project manager, Christopher Spiewak, led the project beyond the challenges, coordinating a complex architectural, engineering, planning and construction process that managed to preserve and restore the character of the original, while rebuilding and expanding upon the structure of the new.
It was a process akin to building a boat in a bottle, with the parts from a boat already in the bottle, without ever moving the sails on the existing boat.
In moments it seemed an illogical endeavor but as the walls came down, brick by brick, the "Floating Roof" was revealed, supported on a multi-step temporary structure. The new foundation and framing were then built down, in, up and around the old roof frame. The historic stone, brick, trim, windows and gables were restored and reset to finish out the exterior, in their original locations.
Resulting in a 21st Century home with a 19th Century soul!
Hands on in every step of the process, Chris' work was summed up in the words of the home's new owners…
“Christopher has a uniquely perceptive vision, dedication and uncompromising attention to detail that transformed our dream house from a dilapidated piece of history into a true modern masterpiece. Where others thought it should be torn down, Chris saw the potential and through painstaking work made the impossible possible. We will forever be indebted to Chris.”
