Orchard House

Orchard House re-imagines the typical, agrarian vernacular of rural Lincolnshire into a re-imagined vision of a sustainable future. This is the third built project of Campion Design Ltd, a nascent practice founded by 25-year old, Will Campion, that has an ethos steeped in the search for authenticity of materials and diligence towards architectural responsibility. Orchard House intends to prove that sustainable-luxury living doesn’t have to be expensive, and we don't need to compromise. The practice intends to amplify tight budgets to create generous innovative architecture on shoe-string budgets, the Orchard House should work as an advocate for global accessible eco-economical luxury to re-calibrate what's beautiful into what’s environmentally responsible.

Orchard House proves this philosophy, at only £1,000pm2 it features, 5m2 of solar cells, a rainwater harvester, mechanically-ventilated heat recovery system and an air-source heat pump. On top of this, the house is built of high-performance SIPs panels that are filled with insulation produced from Rapeseed oil. The idea was to reduce the amount of embodied energy in the house as much as possible to also counteract the carbon footprint of the building, this involved using predominantly timber for the frame and cladding, with the brickwork all coming from reclaimed bricks. The carpets are also made from wool the bathrooms use cork tiles to continue a holistically renewable theme. This low-carbon home was made possible by the client’s, architect’s, builders’ and engineer’s commitment to a holistically responsible new way of designing that could become the new standard in rural England; where, until now, the low house prices have usually prohibited architectural and sustainable innovation
